Window Kit
Is there a such thing as a portable air conditioner that doesn't need to have the hose fed through a window?
I have an issue w/ my ranch. Our kitchen window has a crank out and our living room has a bow window. Therefore, I cannot get an AC in those areas unless it's a portable, but the portable would have to NOT have a window kit cuz there's no window to attach to it. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to cool off these two rooms!! It's HOT!!!
My suggestion is that you talk to your LOCAL heating and air conditioning distributor.
They will know the best type of solution for your area.
I have recently seen systems advertised on TV, here on the East Coast, for units that are mounted THROUGH the wall, with the compressor type components located outside, much like the Heat Pumps that are popular here in MD. I believe they are called "ductless systems.

I am assuming if it is already HOT where you are, that you are out west.
There are a couple of different evaporative cooling systems I have seen used in AZ and CA, but they of course depend on having sufficient and acceptable WATER, and a low relative humidity in the air.
(They would be useless here where the humidity is part of the problem in the summer.)
Water Misting is used in a lot of outdoor restaurants and beach areas in AZ and CA as well.
There are also "portable" air conditioning units. These are usually more expensive than window units, but have the advantage of being able to operate without being mounted in a window. (Be aware that they do usually need to "VENT" the exhaust heat via a duct (light weight hose) to the outside.
They are usually less efficient than installed systems or window units, precisely because they leak some air around the duct and some heat through the duct and from the operating unit being inside the room.

You should carefully consider the OVERALL costs of equipment, and long term OPERATING costs before you make a decision. My guess is that the cost to run the less efficient systems will over come any initial equipment / installation costs of the better systems rather quickly (less than 5-7 years).
You might find that simply replacing one of your windows with one that will accommodate a window air conditioning unit (or installing an additional window if space allows, and the additional heat loss in the winter do not make it prohibitive), might be the cheapest way to go.
