How did the russian aircraft tell between russian and german tanks?
How did the Russian Aircraft that hunted tanks like the IL-2's or P-39's tell between the Soviet tanks and the German tanks ive heard they painted white crosses on top of the turrets but i have never seen one painted as such. I also know that Russian had limited training (especially in the early years of identifying target tanks) but the IL-2's were extremely effective versus German tanks so did the Russian tanks have some sort of symbols? Did they really have crosses? And if so can someone link me a photo of one.
Yes some german tanks had white crosses near the start of the war and this was to prevent their own aircraft from hitting them. The germans also used flags as well. As the war progressed the germans stopped doing this as the markings were used as targets by the russians.

The White band on the back is for arial recognition, I wasn't able to find a cross pic on line however there a numerous books. The cross was either large or the size of the Balkan cross on the sides back and front.
The russian pilots were trained to try and identify the shapes and colours of tanks and were given situation reports of the battle field before they flew and as the war progressed and the Germans lost air superiority the russian adopted similar makings such as red painted markings in the winter and white painted bands or symbols in the spring, summer and fall.

Finally friendly fire often happened on both sides. And usually the side that uses arial recognition is the side that controls the sky and was on the offensive.
