Lowest Price
Is it possible to buy a car below the invoice price or is that the lowest price possible?
I am interested in buying a Honda Odyssey and our nearby car dealer offered it to us at "invoice" price - I looked it up on kelly blue book site and what he said was surely the invoice price. My question is, is it possible to actually ask for deal lower than the invoice price or is that not fair or unheard of; Is the invoice price the lowest price possible or is their more room for negotiation?
Look. Buying a car at invoice less rebates is a smokin' good deal for you. Profit margins on new cars are very thin. By buying at invoice you're taking it all away. Yes, there is this thing called holdback. Holdback is this: A dealer pays invoice for the van (and he'll show you the invoice) say 20K. That is the real, actual price that he paid Honda for the van. After he sells it, and if the flooring costs hadn't killed him already, then Honda will send him back the heldback amount. You can usually find the holdback amount on the invoice, near the bottom in a corner. I'd guess on 20K it's maybe around 600-800. It's not a lot. When you start trying to purchase UNDER invoice, the dealership isn't too motivated to sell. Afterall, it IS a business and they have the right to a fair profit, just like you would if you had a store that you sold stuff from.
I know, I know, you want the best deal possible. But if dealers start selling cars for less than what they paid they'll go out of business. It doesn't take and economic genius to figure that out. You're already slashing through his profits, don't kick him in the balls too.
But seriously, the only reason to own a new car dealership is so that you can have a certified parts and service department. That's where the big bucks are made. When's the last time you negotiated the price of an oil change or alignment?
If you still can't afford the car, look for something less. You'd be getting a great deal at invoice less rebates. Take it and be happy that you didn't have to haggle for it.
