How do I get my energy back?

In the last 4 months, I have
- had to leave a job because of a bullying boss, am now treading water in a dead-end temp job
- broken up with my first serious boyfriend
- been given notice on my accomodation cos my landlady wants to move back in
- undergone / undergoing treatment for depression, although still waiting months for my councelling to start.

Keep doing what you are doing, because although it doesn't feel like it at the moment, these are the things that will help you most.

You have had a lot to cope with in what sounds like a short space of time, so it's no wonder that you are struggling to keep afloat. As an earlier answer said, these things are up there with the most stressful that anyone has to deal with.

I think you need to go back to see your GP and discuss medication, who's idea was it to come off the antidepressants? I'm sure when he realises how you are feeling he will suggest either going back on the same medication or trying something different. You may also be suffering from withdrawal effects that are impacting on how you feel as well.

If the medication will help you then you should go back to it, I understand that you may not want to think that you have to take it long term, I know I didn't, but then at the end of the day if it helps, why not.

I haven't got any good news on the counselling front, I'm afraid, as I know that waiting lists are extremely long in the UK. A recent enquiry to the local psychology department in my town said that urgent referrals could take up to 9 months and that it was better not to even ask about anything not urgent. I have been referred to the neighboroughing town for treatment as they see people much sooner, I've just received a letter telling me it will take between 4 and 5 months.

Once you start talking treatment I'm sure it will help you, but I don't want you to be disappointed with how long it can take to get the first appointment.

The energetic, happy and bouncy person is still there, she is just in the background at the moment and needs some help and support to come out.

Unfortunately there is no magic cure for depression, it takes time and hard work to overcome it. Believe me you are helping yourself and it sounds like you want to move forward and to change things - lots of people don't.

Can I also suggest that you see if there is a local mental health charity in your area:

you can refer yourself and it only takes a phone call or visit.

They will be able to offer you support in a friendly and caring environment. They deal with people on a daily basis who suffer from all kinds of mental ill health, so they are very understanding and knowledgeable.

Try thinking about what you would really like to do as a job, what would stimulate and satisfy your needs. Maybe it's time for a complete career change, try to see this as an opportunity to go where you would really love to go. That's what I did, and I now work as a mental health support worker. I never believed that I could do such a different job to the ones I'd always done in the past, but here I am doing it, and it feels great.

A good way to seek a change is to try voluntary work first, then you can get experience and see if the kind of work will suit you. Doing something to help others, in whatever way, is rewarding and gives you a feeling of fulfillment. Give it a go, you haven't got anything to lose.
