Wargaming question. How can I make par so it looks good but is not permanent?

I am currently ACW armies. I have all sorts of good units. Zouaves, riflemen, infantry, artillery, etc.. My question is how do I base so they are not permanently attached? I want to join them for war games, but removed to place them in dioramas, or in different units.

I suggest the appropriate bases for the game - For example, I put together armies to ACW using the Warhammer Ancient Battles method, so all ministers are on 20mm square bases. If I were to build Dioramas (and I've seen many players of Warhammer that), I slightly hollow parts of the diorama base where ministers would stand - that is, cut a small square the same size as the basis for the ministers to be inserted. If you're worried he gaps be - or a visible line of the base of the mini base of the diorama, and it is a static display, no major transportation, you can sprinkle a small herd, gravel, what ever you use on the lines to hide them for display.
