Navy (just a couple of questions)?
I a couple of questions about the Navy. I am planing to go to the Navel academy for engineering and the going to the Navy
#1how much would it help to get a privet pilots license before join the navy if I want to be a pilot of any aircraft.
#2Does the Navel academy have an are where you can get a pilots license or do you have to get it on your own time
#3What is the life like on an aircraft carrier and don't say a little city because I live in a city with 100,000 people so give detail.
1. Officially, a private license is worthless. Effectively, you're used to wandering around in two dimensions. Learning to drive a car was easy because you were used to two dimensions. You're not used to wandering around in three dimensions. It takes some getting used to. You don't just have to steer right and left, but also up and down. But you're going to be doing stuff in military aircraft that you can't even do in an civilian plane that's not rated for aerobatics.
2. To my knowledge, you don't learn to fly in the Academy. After you graduate and get into aviation, you'll be sent to training depending on the type of aircraft you get.
3. I was aboard an aircraft carrier for a while to recuperate. You want to go to the candy store, the ice cream shop, the jewelry store, the dentist, the doctor, a barber... it's all there. There's laundry facilities, but you bundle up your dirty clothes and they're washed for you. You have a place to sleep. Underway, the mess decks are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There'll be a small area that passes for a gym. It'll have its own TV and radio studios. It'll have its own daily newspaper... and probably a monthly magazine. There will be places to go where you can watch a movie, or you can watch them on TV. It has it's own fire department, and paramedics are less than a thousand feet away. If you get bored, there's a library. Today I suspect they'll even have a computer center. Heck, the thing even has it's own airport.
Working hours at sea are about ten hours. In there you work, eat, use the head (little sailor's room), and normal stuff you would do during the day. But the ship operates round the clock, so they break the crew into what are called "duty sections." The duty sections take turns at keeping the ship running and ready to fight while their shipmates sleep.
When in port, it's as if the Navy wrote the book on mobile home living. No matter where you go, you get to go home to your own bed every night. But even then there are duty sections who have to stay aboard on their duty days.
There are going to be people who gripe. It's kind of an avocation. If they didn't have anything to gripe about... they'd gripe about that. The food's pretty good... considering they have to cook for about 5,000 a meal... that's about 15,000 meals a day. There's no way they can guarantee to please everybody all the time... but you won't go hungry. They'll say that sleeping in the "racks" (bunks) is like being in a coffin. I've never been in a coffin, so I wouldn't know. Yeah, they're "cozy," but, if you're sleeping, what difference does it make if the ceiling is 20 feet over your head, or only two? It's not as if you're going to be entertaining... Yeah, officers get better living spaces, but each one has a desk. That's so they can work into the night... after the enlisted guys knock off for the day.
